Best AI tools, sorted by role and task

There are more than 200,000 AI tools, and most lists of the best ones rank whatever is loud this week. These pages are narrower. Each one takes a role, a task or a kind of tool, pulls the matching entries from the catalogue SkillScout searches when it runs a scan, and ranks them by GitHub stars, so you can see what other people actually use before you install anything.

How to use this directory

Start with the page for your role if you know what fills your week, then open the page for the task you want help with. Every entry gives a plain description in the project's own words, where it lives, how popular it is and the line that gets it onto your machine.

Stars tell you a project is widely used. They do not tell you it fits you, so read the description before you install, and check when the repo was last updated.

What counts as an AI tool here

The catalogue mixes several kinds of tool. MCP servers connect an assistant such as Claude to another app or service. Agent skills are folders of instructions an assistant loads when a task calls for them. Plugins bundle skills, commands and servers for one app. Browser extensions put a model next to the page you are reading. The rest are open-source apps you run yourself.

A repo makes a list only if it is an MCP server or a skill, or if its own description says it uses AI. Lists of other lists are left out, and so are copies of the same project.

Questions

What is the best AI tool?

There isn't one. The best tool is the one that covers a gap in how you work, and that gap is different for a designer, a recruiter and a data analyst. Use the role pages to see what is popular for work like yours, then run a scan to rank tools against your own profile.

Are these AI tools free?

Every entry is an open-source project on GitHub, so the code is free to read and run. Some connect to paid services or need an API key from a model provider, which the project's README will say.

How often do the lists change?

SkillScout refreshes its catalogue copies every day and rebuilds these pages from them. The note above each list says when its numbers were counted.

Your own list

This page ranks by popularity. SkillScout's scan ranks by fit: the AI you already use writes a short profile of how you work, and SkillScout scores about 22,000 AI tools against your gaps and hands back a short list with install steps. It is free, and the server never saves your profile.
