MCP servers for databases
A database MCP server lets an assistant look at your schema, write a query, run it and read the result, all in one conversation. For analysts that turns a question in plain English into an answer with the SQL attached. For developers it means an assistant that can check the real data shape before it writes a migration. This list ranks the database servers in SkillScout's catalogue by GitHub stars.
One database or many
Some servers are built for one engine, such as Postgres, MySQL or MongoDB, and go deep on it. Others cover many engines behind one interface, which is simpler if you work across several.
Look for schema browsing, read-only modes, row limits and query timeouts. Those features decide whether a server is safe to point at real data.
Give the assistant the schema notes you already have, such as table comments or a short glossary. The same question gets a much better query when the model knows what each column means.
Keep production safe
Connect with a read-only user wherever you can, ideally to a replica, and keep write access for development databases. A model that misreads a request can write a bad UPDATE as fluently as a good SELECT.
Watch what data goes into the conversation. Query results are sent to the model, so mask personal fields or use a sample when the data is sensitive.
SkillScout's copy of the official MCP Registry had 760 servers that mention a database on 27 October 2026.
The list
From SkillScout's catalogue, counted on 27 October 2026: 53 entries matched this topic, and these are the 12 with the most GitHub stars, one per project, after a review for false matches. Descriptions are each project's own. Stars show popularity, not fit.

Questions
Can Claude query my Postgres database?
Yes, through a Postgres or multi-database MCP server. Give it a read-only connection string, and it can list tables, write SQL and explain the results.
Is it safe to connect AI to a database?
It can be, with a read-only user, a replica or sample data, row limits and care about personal data. Do not give an assistant write access to production.
