Best open-source AI tools
Open-source AI tools trade convenience for control. You install and update them yourself, and in return you choose the model, keep your data on your machine and see exactly what the software does. This list ranks the open-source AI apps and command-line tools in SkillScout's catalogue by GitHub stars. Libraries for building AI are left out; these are tools you use.
Why choose open source
Privacy is the usual reason: a local model runner and a chat app on top of it means nothing you type leaves your computer. Cost is another, once usage is high. Some people simply want to know what the tool does, and open code is the only way to check.
The tradeoff is upkeep. You handle updates, hardware and setup, and the best local models still trail the largest hosted ones on hard tasks.
Where to start
A local model runner is the foundation for most of the rest: install one, download a model that fits your memory, and point a chat app or an agent at it. From there, add the tools for your task, image generation, automation or coding, from the task pages.
OCR and document tools are the quiet workhorses of this list. They turn scanned PDFs and images into text a model can read, which many other AI tasks depend on.
Read the licence. Most entries here are permissive, some are fair-code with limits on commercial use, and the models you run have licences of their own.
The list
From SkillScout's catalogue, counted on 27 October 2026: 1,941 entries matched this topic, and these are the 15 with the most GitHub stars, one per project, after a review for false matches. Descriptions are each project's own. Stars show popularity, not fit.

Questions
Can I run AI on my own computer?
Yes. Local model runners in this list download open models and run them on your machine. A recent laptop handles small models; larger ones need a graphics card with more memory.
Are open-source AI tools free?
The code is free. You pay in hardware, electricity and setup time, and some tools connect to paid APIs if you choose hosted models.
