What is an MCP server?
An MCP server is a small program that gives an AI assistant new abilities, such as reading your GitHub issues, searching current documentation or querying a database. MCP stands for Model Context Protocol, an open standard Anthropic introduced in November 2024 so that any assistant could connect to any tool in the same way.
How it works
The assistant, such as Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor or VS Code, is the client. The server describes the tools it offers, for example search_issues or run_query, with a short explanation of each. When you ask for something, the model decides whether a tool would help, the client calls the server, and the result goes back into the conversation.
Servers run in one of two ways. A local server runs on your computer, usually started with a command such as npx or uvx. A remote server runs on someone else's machine and you connect over HTTPS, often signing in with your account.
Why it matters
Before MCP, every assistant needed its own integration for every app. With one protocol, a server written once works in every client that supports it. That is why the official MCP Registry grew to tens of thousands of entries within two years.
Adding one, safely
In Claude Code, run claude mcp add with a name and the server's command or URL. In Claude Desktop, add it in settings. Then ask the assistant to use it.
A server acts with whatever access you give it. Prefer official servers from the company behind the service, read which tools a server exposes, and use tokens with the narrowest scope. Remove servers you stop using.

Questions
Is MCP only for Claude?
No. Anthropic created it, but it is an open protocol supported by many clients, including Cursor, VS Code, Windsurf and ChatGPT.
Do I need to code to use an MCP server?
No. Adding a server is one command or a settings change. Writing your own needs code, and there are official SDKs for several languages.
What is the difference between an MCP server and an API?
An API is how a program talks to a service. An MCP server wraps tools, often built on APIs, in a form an AI assistant can discover and call on its own.
